Paws to Read
Building Literacy, Confidence, and Compassion
In Polk County, 16% of adults lack basic literacy skills—a challenge that often begins in childhood. At SPCA Florida, we believe that strong readers grow from early encouragement, positive experiences, and a little extra motivation. That’s where Paws to Read comes in.

Through this Community Outreach program, we partner with local organizations such as Ft. Meade Public Library and the Florida Children's Museum to inspire a love of reading while nurturing empathy for animals. Each month, our caring staff and volunteers visit community programs to host engaging story times featuring animal-themed books, fun discussions about dog and cat behavior, and—best of all—a chance for children and their families to meet and interact with an adoptable animal.
These relaxed, judgment-free reading experiences help children build confidence, strengthen literacy skills, and form positive associations with both books and animals. It’s learning with heart—and a wagging tail.
