Mom's Last Litter
Turning an Accident into a Loving New Beginning
Unexpected litters happen—and when they do, Mom’s Last Litter is here to help you respond with care, compassion, and responsibility. This special program from SPCA Florida supports pet owners through accidental pregnancies while ensuring mom and her babies all have a brighter, healthier future.
Here’s How It Works
Pet owners agree to foster the entire litter of puppies or kittens in their home until each baby is old and large enough for spay or neuter surgery. When that time comes, the whole family—the litter, the mother, and the father (if available)—is brought to SPCA Florida’s Admissions Department.
The parent pets receive FREE spay or neuter surgeries and rabies vaccinations (if needed). After recovery, mom and dad return home with you, while the entire litter stays at SPCA Florida to be lovingly placed for adoption. Additional services, such as microchipping and extra vaccinations for the parents, are optional and can be purchased at the time of surgery.
Program Requirements
To keep everyone safe and ensure the best outcomes, participants agree to the following:
-
All animals must be owned pets, allowing SPCA Florida to legally enroll the litter in the program
-
Puppies and kittens must be at least 6 weeks old to enter
-
A $75 surrender fee is required for the litter
-
Participants must safely and responsibly foster the litter until they meet age, size, and health requirements for surgery and adoption (typically 8–10 weeks old)
-
Two separate appointments are required to ensure the puppies or kittens are protected against disease before entering the shelter
-
The mother—and father, if available—must be brought in at the same time as the litter for their free spay or neuter surgeries
-
Once enrolled, SPCA Florida becomes the legal owner of all animals in the program
-
No animal may be kept or given away
-
The entire litter must be returned for surgery and adoption
-
Owners, friends, or family will have first right to adopt, but must complete the adoption process and pay the adoption fee
-
Why Mom’s Last Litter Matters
Did you know a single female cat can give birth to up to 180 kittens in her lifetime? Accidental litters often lead to more unplanned pregnancies, creating an overwhelming cycle that fills shelters and increases the risk of euthanasia for healthy, adoptable animals.
By choosing Mom’s Last Litter, you’re doing more than preventing future pregnancies—you’re actively saving lives, easing the strain on shelters, and helping ensure every pet has a chance at a safe, loving home.
