Sweet Kitty Survives Abdominal Surgery at 6 Weeks of Age

Dora is a 6 week old kitten that came in through our foster department. Her foster mom noticed Dora was breathing funny and on exam our veterinarian noticed that her heart sounds were unusually muffled. X-rays confirmed her suspicion. Dora had a congenital defect called Peritoneal Pericardial Diaphragmatic Hernia (PPDH). This is where there is a hole in the diaphragm that connects directly to the pericardial sac (the pouch that surrounds the heart). This means Dora's abdominal contents were in her chest sitting up against her heart.

Our veterinarian and her talented team performed surgery and was able to repair her problem. Even more amazing is the fact that Dora was all of .92 pounds at the time of her surgery! That's crazy right?

Dora is back with her foster mom, on the mend and looking forward to the day that she can be adopted.
